Insects in the family Calliphoridae are generally referred to as "blow flies" or "bottle flies".  These are large flies, most often with a bright blue or green metallic sheen. They are most often associated with decaying flesh, generally being the first insects to arrive at a carcass after death. This blow fly is huge - about 3/8 inch long.
