Concealer Moth - Mathildana newmanella
(Newman's Mathildana Moth - Hodges#1059) |
|
This moth is approximately 10mm long. This shot is hideously out of focus, but I love the colors |
This gorgeous moth is covered
with iridescent scales (including the antennae, it seems.) To me, the
white-tipped antennae seem to mimic the stilt-legged flies
of the
Diptera
family Micropezidae who constantly wave their
white-mittened front legs in
the air, mimicking who-knows-what?

Concealer moth's head is
smooth-scaled, with upturned labial palps
Special thanks to John and Jane Balaban of Bugguide.net and Bob Paterson of Moth Photographers Group for identifying this specimen.
