Golden Pfitzer juniper is fast-growing to 3-5' tall, spreading to 15 to 25 feet. It branches from one low point off a large trunk with scaly, red-brown bark. Golden Pfitzer's old growth foliage, and new growth is bright gold, giving the plant its common name. The foliage is pungent when crushed. Grey berries are inconspicuous, less than 1/4 inch, and do not pose a litter problem.

This outstanding ornamental grows well even under difficult conditions such as those at urban sites or the seashore. Grows best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Likes well-drained soils. Watering is not needed after initial planting. There are numerous cultivars of the Chinese juniper, among them:

  • Juniperus chinensis Parsonii
  • Juniperus chinensis Sargentii
  • Juniperus chinensis Angelica Blue
  • Juniperus chinensis Gold Star
  • Juniperus chinensis Mint Julep
  • Juniperus chinensis Plumosa
  • Juniperus chinensis Saybrook Gold
  • Juniperus chinensis Sea Green
  • Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii [1]
