Family Aceraceae – Maples
Native to China, Manchuria and Korea, this lovely maple is heat & drought tolerant.
Cultural Requirements: Prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade; grows in a wide range of soil conditions, but prefers moist, acidic soils; pH adaptable and drought tolerant.
Shantung maple is a compact tree as maples go; this specimen at the Morton Arboretum tops 40 feet.
This tree is one you will love to be underneath on a hot sunny day
It has no serious insect or disease problems, although young trees can be susceptible to Japanese beetles where infestations are heavy.
Like most maples, the root system is shallow and may buckle sidewalks and make mowing difficult.
