Silver-Bordered Fritillary – Boloria selene
Boloria selene is found throughout northern and central Europe, northern Asia, and North America. It inhabits wet meadows, bogs, and woodland edges, where the host plant for the larvae, Viola species, grows.
The adult butterfly feeds on nectar from flowers such as thistles, knapweeds, and scabious. The female lays eggs on the host plant, and the larvae feed on the leaves.
Boloria selene is listed as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, it has declined in some areas due to habitat loss and fragmentation.
Family Nymphalidae is distributed throughout the world except for Antarctica. With over 6,000 species, it is one of the largest families of butterflies.
